Most of the calls about this material start the same way. Somebody put rounded stone on a path or a drive apron, it looked right in July, and by the end of mud season half of it was in the lawn and the rest was in the low spot by the door.
3/8" crushed stone is the usual repair. Roughly 3/8 inch across, angular, with broken faces on every piece. Same size as pea stone, opposite behavior underfoot, and that single difference is most of the reason to buy it.
Small, but every piece has a corner on it
Pick a handful up and it feels sharp against the palm. Tip a bucket of it out on a slope and it stops almost where it lands, instead of running out into a fan the way rounded stone does.
Under a boot it gives once and then holds. Under a wheelbarrow tire it does not part and leave a rut. Compact it and the corners wedge into each other into a layer that takes a rake line and keeps it.
The trade is comfort. Barefoot on a hot afternoon it is less pleasant than a rounded stone, so a play area or a bare-feet patio path is worth thinking about twice.
Dressing a single-car camp drive and the walk out to the fire ring
Two jobs it does well on this ground.
Drive top dressing. Over a base that is already there and already compacted, an inch and a half of this knits down into the open faces of the coarser stone below and leaves a finer surface that sheds water and does not wash into ruts as fast. It is a finish course. It is not the drive.
A walk that gets used in April. The route from the drive to the shed, the side door, or the fire ring at the back of the lot. Laid over fabric on a prepared line it stays walkable in the weeks when the lawn beside it is still soft.
It also beds pipe and utility runs neatly, because the small angular pieces settle in around an awkward shape and support it evenly rather than at a few high points.
A bare pole barn pad is not a 3/8 inch job
A pad that takes a tractor, a trailer or stacked material needs a graded material with fines in it, built up and compacted in lifts. Small stone spread on subgrade will be in the subgrade by the second season.
Use this instead: crusher run for a pole barn or equipment pad, compacted in 4 inch lifts. For a drive that has no base under it, this is not a dressing job either. Build with crushed gravel first, then decide whether the finish course is this or driveway gravel.
The short version. Over a base, it is a surface. On bare ground, it is a temporary one.
An inch and a half of dressing, two and a half for a new walk
| Job | Depth, compacted |
|---|---|
| Top dressing over an existing compacted base | 1 to 1.5 inches |
| New walk over fabric and a thin base | 2 to 3 inches |
| Bedding around a 4 inch drain or utility line | 4 to 6 inches below, then up past the crown |
Those are compacted figures, so spread roughly a quarter more than that loose and let the plate or the traffic bring it down. On dense till that stays wet into May, put fabric under a walk before the stone goes on, or the stone works down into the soil and is gone in two seasons. On the sandy ground along the Merrimack valley, a walk can sit on a thinner base and still hold.
Edge it. A spaded trench edge, steel, or a row of set stone. Without one, every freeze pushes the outer inch outward and by the third spring the walk is wider and thinner than the day it went in.
Tons for a 10 by 46 drive, a 34-foot walk and 40 feet of drain line
Three hypothetical jobs. This size runs about 2,800 lb per cubic yard on this site's published figures for 3/8 inch chip stone, near enough to 1.40 tons per cubic yard.
Top dressing a single-car drive, 10 ft by 46 ft, 1.5 inches
- 10 x 46 = 460 sq ft
- 460 x 1.5 / 12 = 57.5 cu ft
- 57.5 / 27 = 2.13 cu yd
- 2.13 x 1.40 = 2.98 tons, so order 3
Walk to the fire ring, 34 ft by 3 ft, 2.5 inches
- 34 x 3 = 102 sq ft
- 102 x 2.5 / 12 = 21.3 cu ft
- 21.3 / 27 = 0.79 cu yd
- 0.79 x 1.40 = 1.11 tons, so order 1.5 and use the rest on the apron
Bedding a 4 inch perforated line, 40 ft of trench, 12 inches wide, 6 inches deep
- 40 x 1 = 40 sq ft
- 40 x 6 / 12 = 20 cu ft
- 20 / 27 = 0.74 cu yd
- 0.74 x 1.40 = 1.04 tons
Add the backfill above the pipe to that last one and it roughly doubles. Curved paths and odd corners go through the stone calculator, which handles the conversion to tons for you.
When to order something else off the size list
Stone dust if the surface has to be firm enough for a cane, a wheel or a table leg. It packs harder than this does and it is the standard setting bed under flagstone.
Pea stone if the look of rounded stone matters more than the footing, and the area is flat and edged.
#8 crushed stone if the layer is buried and its only job is to pass water. It is the same rough size with the fines taken out, so it drains hard and never binds.
Work out the square footage, run it through the calculator, then choose a quantity and a delivery date here. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, and the driver needs firm ground with room to back and tip.
