#8 Crushed Stone: The Clean Chip for Pipe Bedding and Paver Joints

A culvert under a camp road usually fails twice. Once when it gets bedded on whatever came out of the trench, and again the following April, when the thaw carries that material out from under the pipe and leaves it hanging.

#8 crushed stone is what goes in instead. About 3/32 inch to 3/8 inch, crushed, graded to the #8 band, with little to no fines in it. Small enough to work in around the haunches of a pipe with a shovel. Open enough that water keeps moving through it while the ground above is still frozen.

Tip a yard out and the pile looks close to sorted. The pieces run a consistent chip size, all broken faces and corners, nothing rounded in it, and no powder collecting at the bottom of the heap. Run a handful through a glove and the glove stays clean.

That last part is the product. Stone with fines in it packs tight and seals itself. A clean #8 holds its own pieces apart at a small scale, so the gaps between them stay connected top to bottom.

Color is whatever the crushed rock happens to be. Nobody orders this one to look at.

Where it earns the trip: bedding pipe, filling joints, ringing a fire pit

Three jobs account for most of what leaves the yard.

Bedding a pipe. Culvert, perforated drain line, conduit. The chip size beds evenly along the barrel instead of bearing on two or three high points, and it packs in around the lower quarters where a shovel can reach but a compactor cannot.

Permeable paver work. In the open course beneath permeable pavers and swept into the joints between them. That detail depends on water going down through the surface rather than running across it, which is what a stone with no fines allows.

A fire pit apron. Stone that will not burn, will not hold mud and is small enough that a chair leg sits on it rather than in it. Three feet of it out from the ring keeps sparks off the grass and boots out of the wet.

A pole barn pad and a single-car drive both want something else

Clean stone does not bind. Under a tire it shifts sideways, it will not hold a crown, and a plow blade picks it up and throws it into the lawn.

Use this instead. For a pole barn or equipment pad, order crusher run and compact it in lifts, because the fines in it are what turn loose stone into a surface. For a single-car gravel drive, build the base in crushed gravel and finish with driveway gravel. If a wet seam runs through either of those, #8 can go in as a thin drainage lift underneath, buried where traffic never reaches it.

None of it gets compacted with a plate. A clean stone is at its packed density the moment it stops rolling, so a few passes with the back of a rake is the whole exercise. On soft till, run fabric under the stone and up the trench walls before anything goes in, or the silt below will be in the layer by the second spring.

Tons for a 10-foot fire pit apron and 30 feet of culvert bedding

Two hypothetical jobs. This size runs about 2,800 lb per cubic yard on the figures this site publishes for 3/8 inch chip stone, near enough to 1.40 tons per cubic yard.

• Outer circle: 0.7854 x 10 x 10 = 78.5 sq ft
• Ring itself: 0.7854 x 4 x 4 = 12.6 sq ft
• 78.5 - 12.6 = 65.9 sq ft of stone
• 65.9 x 3 / 12 = 16.5 cu ft
• 16.5 / 27 = 0.61 cu yd
• 0.61 x 1.40 = 0.85 tons, so order 1

Culvert bedding, 30 ft of trench, 3 ft wide, 6 inches below the pipe

• 30 x 3 = 90 sq ft
• 90 x 6 / 12 = 45 cu ft
• 45 / 27 = 1.67 cu yd
• 1.67 x 1.40 = 2.34 tons, so order 2.5

Backfilling around that pipe up to the crown takes roughly as much again, so a 30 foot culvert is a five ton conversation rather than a two ton one. Odd shapes go through the stone calculator.

What sits either side of it in the size list

#89 crushed stone is the same rough size but carries fines, which makes it a packing material rather than a draining one. Order it for joints that should stiffen, never for trenches that should stay open.

3/8 inch crushed stone overlaps at the small end and is sold as a surface material, for walks and drive dressing where the stone is meant to be seen and walked on.

#57 stone is the next size up and the default once a trench is wide enough to take it. For a 4 inch drain line the smaller chip is easier to work; for an 8 inch line or a curtain drain, the bigger stone moves more water per shovelful.
