Everything You Need to Know About Crushed Concrete

Recycled crushed concrete

For a camp road, driveway, or work area, a contractor places Crushed Concrete below the exposed surface where it can carry traffic. It is recycled aggregate made from broken concrete, and it contains angular pieces along with fine material. Under compaction, the pieces key together while the fines settle into the open spaces.

New Hampshire ground conditions can include granite ledge near grade and substantial frost movement, so a loose base is not much help beneath a traveled surface. Crushed Concrete is intended to become a bound, load-bearing course rather than a drainage layer. Work it over a prepared base, dampen it slightly if needed, and compact it well before adding the finish above. Its light gray appearance is generally secondary to the support it provides in the build.

Common Uses

Driveway & Parking Pad Base

For new driveways, rebuilt driveways, and parking areas, crushed concrete works well beneath the finished surface. Place and compact it in separate lifts to create a load-supporting layer that can help reduce ruts and potholes. It may remain exposed for traffic or receive a top layer of driveway gravel for a more finished appearance.

Private Road & Site Base

For construction entrances, equipment areas, farm lanes, and private roads, crushed concrete can serve as the supporting layer. It carries heavy machinery and truck traffic while providing a surface that remains usable following rain.

Support Layer for Pavers & Pads

A layer of compacted crushed concrete below pavers, paths, sheds, and hot tub pads distributes loads and helps the finished area remain level. Its larger particles pass water more freely than native clay, reducing water held beneath the surface. Place sand or screenings over it as bedding before the pavers are set.

Fill & Backfill

Use crushed concrete as structural fill to raise low areas, bring up grade, or backfill beside retaining walls and footings. The angular material packs into a stable layer and is less prone than soil fill to becoming muddy or washing away.

Why Choose Crushed Concrete

Cost Compared with Quarried Base

Because it is recycled rather than quarried, crushed concrete generally has a lower cost per ton than crushed stone base. At every order size, it is priced below our driveway gravel, which can make a noticeable difference for long driveways and access roads.

Compacts Hard and Stays Put

Angular fragments and fines knit together when compacted using either a roller or a plate compactor. As the material settles, old cement paste can contribute to binding. This creates a dense layer intended to resist movement, ruts, and washouts.

Recycled Concrete Use

This material puts concrete back to use rather than sending it to a landfill and reduces the need for newly quarried stone beneath a driveway or road.

Material for Base and Fill

Use crushed concrete for parking-pad and driveway foundations, access routes, fill, and support beneath sheds and patios. One delivery can cover much of a project's early ground preparation.
